The idea came to me a few years ago when I was asked to help with a fundraiser for a sick boy named Mikołaj. Kasia Skomra, Mikołaj's aunt who lives in Ireland, creates beautiful Christmas decorations, among other things. The money from the sale of the decorations was a contribution to the boy's treatment. That's when I thought I could organise a Mikołajki event.
The atmosphere was so warm and inviting that the event naturally became an annual tradition.
Our „Mikołajki” (St. Nicholas Day) celebrations started within the "In a Magic Circle" group, and over time opened up to everyone. Anyone who wishes to can join us. The idea behind the circles I lead is for them to expand with more beautiful-souled people. The most important things are being together, joy, and sharing warmth.
On St. Nicholas Day, we draw symbolic presents for each other. These are meant to be small gifts, letters, or handmade art, all given from the heart. We cook together, decorate the table, drink mulled wine, and laugh over dishes seasoned with warming spices. Everyone brings something of their own: a smile, warmth, their presence. And Santa Claus (whom I once had the pleasure of impersonating) distributes presents among us, all while wearing festive hats and colourful jumpers.
Last year, we joined the Polish „Santa Claus for Seniors” initiative. It involves seniors writing letters to Santa Claus, and donors can fulfil their wishes. Often, these are basic necessities, underwear, warm slippers, bedding. Just reading the letters together brought many tears...
