Aromatherapy as support in the process of overcoming depression 

Depression is one of the most common mental health disorders of the 21st century. According to the World Health Organisation, it affects over 5% adults worldwide. People living away from their homeland are particularly vulnerable – migration, separation from family, and language barriers contribute to low mood and feelings of isolation.

Although psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy remain the basis of treatment, supportive methods for mental well-being are increasingly being used. One of these is aromatherapy – the use of natural essential oils to improve mood and alleviate symptoms of depression.
Essential oils contain volatile chemical compounds (terpenes, aromatic alcohols) which, when inhaled, stimulate the limbic system – the part of the brain responsible for emotions and memory. Essential oil molecules can also pass through the blood-brain barrier and quickly influence behavioural changes. Research shows that smells can affect neurotransmitter activity, including serotonin and dopamine, and thus regulate mood.
